Interview: ŠPELA RAJH

We're talking with Špela Rajh, the product manager for Italian shoe and bag brands such as Dolce & Gabbana, Baldinini, Pollini, Fru.it, My-Best Bag Firenze and others. She has always been drawn to Italy and its rich fashion heritage, and in her work, she focuses on quality, timelessness, and carefully selected fashion pieces designed to inspire customers.

1. What inspired you to work with Italian brands? In your view, what makes them stand out from the rest?

I have always been captivated by Italy and Italian fashion brands, and they continue to fascinate and inspire me to this day. I frequently travel to Italy for business, especially to Milan, where I connect with top fashion brands. I regularly explore their window displays, visit their stores, attend fashion shows, and tour showrooms. Additionally, Milan's street fashion is an immense source of inspiration for anyone who loves fashion.

Italian brands have an advantage, as they come from a country with a rich history of culture and art. Many of these companies have been in the market for decades. Their extensive experience and tradition give them global recognition, and consumers trust in their quality.

2. How does your work change each season to adapt to new trends and customer expectations?

Each season tells a new story, and that’s the beauty of my work - it’s constantly evolving and improving. We’ve been collaborating with many brands for years, building genuine relationships and growing together. When selecting a new collection, we always keep our valued customers in mind. We aim to offer them timeless pieces that will bring them joy for many seasons to come. At the same time, we want to surprise them with something unexpected - fashion pieces that capture the latest trends and add a fresh touch to their favorite styles.

Each season, we explore the market and introduce new brands. Smaller niche brands are also very important to us, especially since the Italian fashion market offers such a wide selection. Internally, we call them our 'little gems' - fashion treats that set us apart from other retailers.

3. How would you describe the distinctive qualities of Italian bags and shoes that our customers value most? Or, in your opinion, what makes Italian shoes and bags truly timeless?

Italians are masters of design. Their style is globally recognized, and their sense of aesthetics is unparalleled, especially in the realm of shoes and bags. Our customers love bags that stand out yet remain versatile. We place emphasis on refined details and subtle logos. It’s essential that these bags are lightweight and crafted with quality to complement our dynamic daily lives.

Finding shoes that fit perfectly is always a challenge, and this is where Italian footwear has a significant advantage. Many artisans, who mastered the craft of shoemaking, have passed down their knowledge through generations. This centuries-old tradition, combined with advanced technology, gives Italian footwear brands a remarkable edge.

4. What shoes and bag trends are dominating this fall and winter?

This fall and winter, soft, half-moon shaped bags dominate, often in autumn shades, with brown standing out. For footwear, loafers and ballet flats take center stage, while animal prints and various details make a comeback, adding a touch of boldness and creativity to everyday outfits. Large shopper bags in rugged leather, suede, and with fur details have replaced summer baskets. These pair well with boots, which can also be XL (over the knee). For evening occasions, unique, standout pieces are always on trend.

5. Can you highlight a lesser-known Italian brand that you think customers should definitely discover?

My-Best Bag Firenze - for those who love to combine style and functionality and Paris Texas - for those who like to be bold and different.

6. If someone wanted to upgrade their wardrobe with an Italian bag or pair of shoes this season, what would you recommend?

A small suede tote bag from Pollini, high leather boots from Fru.it, a mini bag in bouclé fabric from Gianni Chiarini and lace sneakers from Dolce & Gabbana.

7. In your opinion, how is Italian fashion influencing the global fashion industry, both in terms of design and in its approach to sustainability and quality?

As one of the leading fashion powerhouses, Italy plays a key role in shaping the global fashion industry. The focus is increasingly on sustainability as a central aspect of production, with consumers showing a growing preference for eco-friendly practices. Many companies are investing in ethical supply chains, using recycled or natural materials, and working to reduce their carbon footprint.

Our Italian brands are increasingly using organically produced leather, alternative materials (such as vegan leather and bioplastics), and providing transparent information about the source of raw materials. Many are returning to traditional craftsmanship techniques, which have a lower environmental impact and extend the product's lifespan. Numerous manufacturers also support a circular economy, offering repair, refurbishment, or recycling programs for their products. In this way, Italian fashion aims not only for timeless aesthetics but also for responsible production that aligns with modern sustainability values.

8. What advice would you give to customers looking to build a more sustainable wardrobe?

Avoid fast fashion and impulsive purchases. Let each purchase be a rewarding experience that you can enjoy in our stores. Take your time to choose a quality piece that will complement your existing wardrobe. Always feel free to ask our advisors for guidance - they can help make your selection easier and offer ideas on how to best style your chosen piece.

A new purchase shouldn’t just sit in the closet; we connect 'sustainable' with 'useful.' Personally, I’m always delighted when my 13-year-old daughter asks me to take good care of a new fashion piece because she hopes to wear it herself when she’s grown up.
